The Gift that Will Benefit the High School Graduate for Life

DVD Covers3

Wondering what to get for all of those high school (HS) graduates you’ll be receiving invitations from? Well, what better choice than a gift that is one-part knowledge, two-parts inspiration and motivation? My two DVDs, The Sex Talk Every Teen Girl Needs to Hear and The Sex Talk Every Teen Guy Needs to Hear, would make the perfect gift for your HS grad.

As I’m getting ready to go to college, I think this information is even more important. Reading tweets, articles, and hearing personal accounts of many college students makes it seem like you have to have sex in college if you want to be in a relationship. Since I never had a boyfriend in high school, I was looking forward to one in college. Thank you for reminding me that sex isn’t necessary. –High School Senior

Just because they are graduating, doesn’t mean they have to stop learning. As a matter of fact, there are some things they especially need to learn before they embark upon this next phase of their lives—called college.

It’s all in the preparation

They need to know how to navigate in an environment where they’ll have newfound freedom, a party scene complete with exposure to drugs and alcohol, and let’s be real—plenty of opportunities to have sex.  So often as their loved ones, we focus our attention and hard-earned dollars on our high school grad’s physical preparation for college (i.e. comforters and microwaves for their dorm, shopping for clothes). And while those are all great and needed, we often overlook their social preparation, which is equally important to their success in college. How confident are you that your incoming freshman is going to make healthy choices when it comes to his/her college relationship(s)?

Why is it so important for them to be armed with the information and tools to make good choices when it comes to their relationships?

For one, the age group that has the highest % of out of wedlock pregnancies is 20 to 24-year old young women. A pregnancy during a young lady’s college years can hinder her from reaching her goal of earning a college degree and embarking upon her dream career.

Also, it is estimated that 1 in 4 college students will contract an STD during their time at school. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that about 20 million new sexually transmitted infections occur each year. And, statistics from the CDC notes that although people ages 15-24 represent only 25% of the sexually active population, they account for more than half of the new STD diagnoses each year. It's a powerful statistic to keep in mind for those entering the college dating scene.

When Sex Before Going to College is the Goal

Unfortunately, the pressure to have sex doesn’t always start once students step foot on the college campus. Many of them feel pressure to lose their virginities before they get to college. Don’t believe me? Check out what this young lady wrote:

Thank you so much for coming to speak to our class. You made me realize how valuable my virginity really is. A week before you came to our class, I had set a very stupid goal to lose my virginity before I went off to college in the fall. I did not want to be the only one out of my group of friends to not have had sex. As you went through your presentation, I realized that I did not want to be a statistic in someone’s presentation. I wanted to be different. You made me realize my worth and I’ll never forget what you did for me. –High School Senior

High school guys have told me that girls they weren’t even dating asked them if they would have sex with them so they wouldn’t be a virgin when they went to college. Girls are now so intent on losing their virginity before college that they’re willing to lose it with someone they aren’t even dating. Just to get it over with. You’d be surprised how common this thinking is, which means the sooner my DVD gets in their hands the better.

And it's not just the girls who think college is synonymous with sex, as evidenced by this young man’s letter:

The path I was headed down earlier this year was to go to college, party and have sex a lot. After listening to you, I realize the only thing sex is in my life right now, is a barrier that could keep me from reaching my dreams. Because of your talk, I have chosen to take the road of being successful and reaching my fullest potential. I have too much to offer and I have too many dreams to throw them away for something as temporary as sex. Now, I have aspirations of graduating college, attaining a well paying job, marrying a woman and having a family. Also, I realize how selfish I have been about girls because I know I would be furious if anyone disrespected my daughter or my sister. I am ashamed of even looking at a girl with lust now. My whole outlook on my future has changed. We all have a choice and I choose to be the man my father raised me to be. –High School Senior

I’m so grateful this young man heard my message before going to college and following through on his original plan. Don’t you want the young ladies and young men in your life to hear the same message?
